There are two important facets to an efficient hybrid:
1) An efficient machine, and 2) an efficient driver. Working in unison, they can dramatically enhance fuel economy.

Eco Assist? is composed of two basic functions:
  • A sophisticated feedback system teaches you to drive more efficiently,
  • An ECON? button that automatically helps increase your vehicle's fuel efficiency.

These components can work individually or in tandem to help boost your overall fuel economy. As the EPA tests have shown, the Insight is capable of excellent fuel economy without any special techniques. Utilizing the tools of Eco Assist? can take the Insight to higher levels of efficiency.

Even the most affordable Insight LX has the added benefit of its innovative Eco Assist? system as a standard feature. Eco Assist helps the driver operate the Insight more efficiently through a unique, engaging feedback interface and precise automation of key vehicle functions in certain situations. The result-improved fuel economy.

Consider these figures for the base models of these two hybrids:

Insight LX $20,550
Prius II $23,550
Savings $3,000

The entry-level 2010 Prius II, at $23,550, costs $3,000 more before taxes and registration fees. At this price point, the cars are similarly equipped. The Honda's higher value becomes more clear when you consider the fact that the Eco-Assist? system is a standard feature on the base LX trim level.
Upgrade to the Insight EX and you'll still save $$$:

Insight EX $22,050
Prius II $23,550
Savings $1,500

Miles Per Dollar
If you're torn between the Insight and the Prius, it may help to envision how the savings translate to miles. Assuming the price of gasoline stays around the $3.00 mark, the money you save on the Insight can be thought of as "additional miles."

Insight LX vs. Prius II
additional miles. 41,000

Insight EX vs. Prius II
additional miles. 20,500

2010 Honda Insight EX Earns Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK Award for 2009

August 13 2009

All-new hybrid wins top honor

The 2010 Honda Insight EX earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2009 TOP SAFETY PICK Award, the organization's highest honor. The annual award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side, and rear crashes based on ratings in IIHS tests.

"Fuel economy and safety have always been part of Honda's DNA," said Erik Berkman, vice president of corporate planning and logistics. "The Insight EX is a great example of an affordable vehicle that receives a high rating for safety."

Honda operates two of the world's most sophisticated crash test laboratories with the objective of developing the highest level of safety design and technology. The Tochigi, Japan, facility was the world's first indoor omni-directional car-to-car crash testing facility and the Honda R&D America's Raymond, Ohio, development center performs testing on all U.S.-developed models.

The 2010 Honda Insight was named a 2009 Top 10 Green Car by Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com
Amidst formidable competition, Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com named the 2010 Insight one of its 2009 Top 10 Green Cars[1]. Bringing the Insight to such heights was, of course, the Insight's 41 mpg overall fuel economy[2]. Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com also liked the Insight's price, saying, ".the all-new Honda Insight is the least expensive full-production hybrid available in the U.S."

Car and Driver ranks the 2010 Insight number one in comparison test.
In the July 2009 edition of Car and Driver, a comparison test titled "Mileage Maestros" ranked the Insight number one. Praising the Insight for its "attractive price" and real-world ergonomics, the editors especially liked the Insight's sporty handling and solid road manners, writing, "Body motions are few, the suspension is tight and difficult to disrupt, and someone even dialed in a touch of lift-throttle oversteer to help rotate that cliff of a tail." The editors particularly enjoyed the paddle shifters, stating, "One of the EX model's most endearing features is its paddle shifters.. In Sport mode the transmission is tenacious about holding onto those "gears"... and lent the driver a sense of involvement and control..."
